thankful thursday {link up}

{What are you thankful for this week? Write your own Thankful Thursday and link it up at the bottom of this post or over at Our Family of Four.}

This Thursday I am thankful for:

1) My first Thunder experience. Thunder Over Louisville that is. Thunder over Louisville is considered to be the opening ceremony of the Derby Festivals, and is rated as one of the Top 100 events in North America. It all starts off with an impressive air show that boasts over 100 planes over the Ohio River, which all leads up to the firework show. And not just any firework show... oh, only the largest firework show in North America. I'm pretty excited.

2) Rips sour candy. Have you had these things? My sister and I first discovered them at a gas station somewhere in the middle of nowhere, TX and now we both always buy a pack if we see them. They come in the bite size assortment bag I show pictured as well as one long roll. The bite size assortment is the perfect snack for scrapbooking...

3) Scrapbooking. Yes... it's true. I am a closet scrapbooker. I have a ridiculous amount of scrapbooking supplies... yet I rarely make time to sit down and work on a scrapbooking project. But last night, I went to my girlfriend's house with the sole purpose of scrapbooking. It.was.amazing. I forgot how much I enjoyed matching pretty papers together and documenting my memories. Last night inspired me... I want to do this more.

embrace the camera

This week's embrace the camera photo is with two of my absolute favorite girls... Hillary & Haley. My two "H" girls in our community group...

I adore these two...

hosting a successful craft party

Last Friday night I hosted my first ever (organized) craft party... Crafts & Classics to be exact. It was a major success! We are already planning when the next one will be.

So, what are the key components to a smashing craft party, you might ask? Here are a few things I recommend...

::Have specific projects in mind.
A couple of weeks before my party, I started a list of projects that I thought would be fun for us to do as a group. I narrowed the list down based on time and cost, and basically ended up with 4 projects for the evening. However... we only got to 2 of them. That's what happens when you get a group of girls together... we talk and laugh more than we craft... and that is what it's all about. Regardless, I had some specific projects in mind, and this allowed me to shop for supplies and better prepare for our evening. The plan was to decoupage a clipboard, create a small flip book, make a pair of earrings, and decorate a journal... like I said... we got to the first 2. We'll save the earrings and journal projects for our next party:)

::Ask your guests to help cover the cost of supplies.
If you are planning on crafting projects that your guests will take home with them, there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking your guests to assist with the cost of supplies. I asked my guests to bring $5 each. This helped cover the cost of the clipboards, journals, and a few miscellaneous items. We used paper and ribbon from my stash and I already had most of the crafting tools needed for the evening. It's also a good idea to ask other crafters to bring some of their tools, (like hot glue guns or paper cutters) especially if you are expecting a larger group.

::Crafting "stations" are a good idea with larger groups.
Speaking of larger groups... if you are expecting a big crowd, it might be a good idea to have a few stations set up so your guests can work on varying projects at once. For example, you might have 3 or 4 girls making jewelry in one room and 3 or 4 girls working on clipboards in another room.

::Gather your supplies before your guests arrive.
The night before my party, I thought about each project individually and gathered up any supplies I thought we might use. I put everything in a big basket, from the clipboards, to the Mod Podge, to scissors, and my laminating machine. Anything I thought we might need I put in this basket. Once your guests arrive, you want to be able to enjoy your time with them... not searching high and low for your ribbon.

::A theme is always more fun.
Always. You can never go wrong with a theme (well... I guess you could... but that's another story). Our theme was "Crafts & Classics," (C & C) which basically meant we had Breakfast at Tiffany's playing in the background while we crafted away. A friend of mine suggested "C, C, C & C," (Crafts, Classics, Cupcakes & Champagne)... brilliant, huh? Or you could have the craft revolve around your theme... for example, maybe it's a bridal party and you create something to give to the bride-to-be as a gift? It's your party... your theme.

::Snacks. Don't forget the snacks... lots of snacks.
Good snacks make everything better. I asked my guests to bring a snack or drink to share, and once everyone arrived, we had a smorgasbord of food to choose from. Sometimes it can be as easy as opening up a bag of peanut butter M&M's and dropping them in the middle of your crafting circle. Or just order a pizza... or cupcakes & champagne... you really can't go wrong here.

So... there you have it. The secret to a successful craft party. If you are thinking about hosting one, you totally should. It was so much fun. I will definitely be having another one in the future.

Oh! Do you like all of the fabulous clipboards you have been seeing?? Would you perhaps like a demo on how to make those? Oh, you would? Well, you're in luck... I will be posting a "how-to" on the clipboards very soon! :)

top 2 tuesday

This week's Top 2 Tuesday is your favorite drinks... That's an easy one... no problem...

1) Dr. Pepper. I sometimes think I would literally fall over and die if I don't have my daily Dr. Pepper. I can't help it... I'm addicted. I'm trying to cut back and just have 1 a day... but I mean, this is my morning coffee people... it's the caffeine I use to function and get through the morning. (Oh, and Diet Dr. Pepper is not a proper substitute... yuck.)

2) Dirty Martini. And when I say dirty martini, I mean a dirtaaaayy martini. Do not scrimp on the olive juice. Oh, and no cheap vodka either... give me the good stuff. And lots of olives too... preferably blue cheese stuffed olives... yum.

chesser family {louisville family photographer}

Meet the Chesser family. I adore this family. The boys had me cracking up the entire session... making faces and giving me bunny ears so the other one would smile during their individual shots. Savannah, the oldest is an aspiring photographer herself... before I arrived she had already snapped several impressive photos of her brothers. It was such a fun session... with such a fun family... see for yourself...

Which one is your favorite?

thankful thursday {link up}

{join in the Thankful Thursday fun at the bottom of this post or over at Our Family of Four}

This Thursday I am thankful for:

1) Having my husband home. Lance went out of town for a long weekend, because as a seminary student, he is blessed with the privilege of grown-up spring breaks. So jealous, I know. But I am so glad he is back home now... the king size bed is just too big and lonely by myself.

2) My upcoming party. I'm hosting a "Crafts & Classics" party tomorrow night with the girls. We will be working on some fabulously crafty projects all while watching some of the best classic movies ever made... think Breakfast at Tiffany's and Casablanca. We will also be stuffing our faces with sweets and treats all while laughing our heads off. That's the plan anyways. Don't worry... you will hear more about this party... promise.

3) Hobby Lobby. I seriously love this store. And with the above mentioned party around the corner, I have had a good excuse to go. I love their scrapbooking section, the jewelry section, and I usually can't resist just browsing through the fabric section when I'm there... but it's all the home decor items that get me every time... and those darn 50% off signs.

Feel free to link up your own Thankful Thursday post below... it's always so encouraging to read what you are thankful for... keep joining in... and keep being thankful.

And don't forget to check out my giveaway going on right now here.

embrace the camera

It's been a while since I "embraced the camera" over with Emily at The Anderson Crew. Speaking of The Anderson Crew... their "crew" recently went from 6 to 7 because their beautiful adoption of little Elsa finally became official! Go check out their welcome home Elsa post here.

So... my embrace the camera picture is from a couple of weekends ago when I went camping in order to cross off #5 on my 30 by 30 list. This is me attempting to be all outdoorsy and help with the tent set up.

And help I did indeed:) Here it is. It didn't collapse on us or anything.

black tag diaries first ever giveaway!!!

In light of my recent bird whispering skills (see post below) and the fact that I recently hit 100 followers (ummm... wow), I have decided to have my first ever giveaway!!

And in true bird-whispering fashion, I am giving one lucky reader their very own copy of Ann Lamott's Bird by Bird. You may remember me talking about how awesome this book was a few days ago. The subtitle of this book is "Some instructions on writing and life." But don't think this book is only meant for aspiring writers... not so. This book is so much more. It is a great read for anyone wanting practical ideas for improving their writing, ways to enrich your personal journaling, and even your blog writing. In true Ann Lammot fashion, there are witty remarks and funny chapters titled "Shitty First Drafts." I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Along with the Bird by Bird copy, I will also throw in a beautiful Book Notes journal. This journal has tons of pages for your book log, a list of the classics, and a place to list all of those novels you hope to get around to reading one day. And it's just pretty.

Soooo... to enter the giveaway you simply need to be a follower of Black Tag Diaries and leave a comment below telling me what your favorite book is. That's it. Simple as that. I will select a winner this Sunday (April 10th).
