the guest room... that i never showed you...

So yeah... we've been living in our little rental house for a full year now... and I've yet to show you what the guest room looks like.

Well, I kind of did...  I showed you what it looked like before we actually made it look like a guest room... when it was that room... you know the one... you also might remember it briefly from the house tour.

But we finally made it look like an actual guest room... ten months ago.  Want to see??

Here's what it looked like when we moved in...

It pretty much looked like this for the first two months that we were in our house.  Well, actually it took us one month to just purchase the mattresses.  And then they sat on the floor for another month.

However, we did eventually get all fancy and put sheets and pillows on them... you know... for our guests.

Then, finally... I.just.couldn't.take.it.anymore.  I needed real beds.  Like, off-the-ground-beds.  I found those amazing headboard thingies at TJ Maxx for $30 each.  I have no idea what they are really for, but I have to say, they make amazing twin headboards, don't you think?

If you look closely, you can spot my sweet little cottage blue nightstand that I painted last year.  I LOVE how it looks in this room.  I also decided to put the framed Alaska map in this room... you can kind of see it in the photo above.  The blues in the map perfectly match the blue duvet covers I bought for the end of the beds (Target).  Another favorite item is my Goodwill lamp base... I love the vintage feel it brings to the room.

This room quickly went from being my least favorite room in the house to my absolute favorite...
Little Cat agrees.

thankful thursday {link up}

{Link up your own Thankful Thursday post below...}

This Thursday I am thankful for...

1) Being home.  It's been 13 days since I've been home.  But crazier than that... it's been 27 days since Lance and I have been home together.  Yes.  Twenty.seven.flippin.days.  Lance and I have spent just one week together out of the past four weeks.  That, my friends, is ridiculous.  To say that I am thankful to be home... WITH my husband... is a major understatement.

2) Company dinners.  I mean, come on...  You can't beat free steak and free wine... especially with good friends.  Tuesday night was spent with some of my favorite co-workers for a tasty steak dinner... on the company bill.  Just can't beat it.

3) Little Cat.  How can you not love Little Cat??  He is so happy to have both Lance and I home... can't you tell:)

top 10 :: workin' 9 to 5...

Well, actually it's 8-5... or sometimes 8-6... or even 8-7 on a really crazy day.  But that's beside the point.  I have very little to complain about.  I work as an accountant for an outstanding company that has allowed me to work from my home in Louisville 80% of the time.  About once every couple of months I fly down to Atlanta for a week in the office.

I don't talk about my day job much here on the ol' blog... because, I mean... really... who wants to sit and read about the thrilling lifestyle of an accountant?  Come on?  I'm surprised you've actually read this far.

When I travel to Atlanta for work, I have my own set of quirky little routines and idiosyncrasies. I often battle between the pros and cons of traveling for work... but overall it's a pretty sweet gig.  What exactly do I do when I'm in Atlanta by myself for a week (or more) at a time??  Well...

1) I live out of a suitcase.

2) I eat lunch with co-workers.

3) I sit in traffic.

4) I get manicures.

5) I dress up... (heels and everything).

6) I shop.

7) I eat dinner in bed.

8) I meet up with old friends.

9) I order to go.

10) And oh yeah... I work too.

Linking up to Many Little Blessings.

weekend festivities...

This weekend was pure craziness.  It was filled with shopping... and girlfriends... and amazing food... and margaritas... and more shopping... and decorating... and Olympics...  All around... a great weekend.

I'm still in Atlanta for work.  Yes.  Still.  This is day 10.  To say I'm ready to go home would be a major understatement... but when I am in Atlanta, I always try to make the best of it... spending a large portion of my time catching up with old friends... especially if I'm here during a weekend.  And this weekend was no exception...

It started Friday night by meeting up with these two favorite friends.  We were on a mission for the weekend... to enjoy great company (check), catch up on life (check), laugh a lot (check), and buy some things to decorate Holly's downstairs guest room (check).

We started in West Elm and found the bulk of the bedding there.  We spent two hours arranging and rearranging different bedding options on their display beds.  We were told that the person that sets up the display bedding would not be happy with us the next day.

After West Elm, we walked down to Rosa Mexicano for dinner and drinks.  Hands down, this place had the absolute best guacamole I have ever tasted.  It.was.amazing.

As was the rest of the food... and the company.  Love these girls.

After dinner we just had to stop inside Kilwins candy shop... the window display was just to much to pass by without entering.  And even though I was stuffed from dinner, you better believe I didn't leave before buying a caramel apple:)

The three of us girls stayed the night in Atlanta, only so we could resume our shopping first thing on Saturday morning.  And we didn't mess around on Saturday.  We grabbed some quick breakfast, then made stops at Crate & Barrel, Z Gallery, Target, and TJ Maxx.

The car got fuller...

...and fuller...

...and fuller.

Thankfully we didn't have to drive far... only to where we left my car overnight... which was a good thing... I don't think my head could have held up those boxes for an entire hour drive home.  We finally made it back to Holly's Saturday afternoon... where the real fun began...

Holly and I started to piece the new room together and it looks so good!!  Full post coming soon... but here's a little sneak peek.  I love the bedding we came home with!

Sunday was just as great.  I went to church with my brother-in-law & sister-in-law, then met another girlfriend (you may know her from here) for lunch at a new(er) local cafe... Sweet Breads.  We both had the pimento cheese... totally worth the calorie intake.

Then dinner I was off to meet another dear friend.  This one I hadn't seen in over two years, so to say we needed to catch up would be a huge understatement.  Nothing beats a 3-hour dinner with an old friend:)

And now it's back to reality.  Hotel living for 3 more days... classy 1987 furniture... a suitcase wardrobe... and take-out dinners.  It was a fabulous weekend... but I am SOOOO ready to get home.

What about you?  What were you up to this weekend?

black family reunion...

Last weekend Lance's family had their 25th annual family reunion... and this is no small affair people.  We go all out.  There are usually around 50-60 family members that show up each year and we basically spend the entire weekend eating together, laughing together and eating together again.  Sprinkle in a few competitive games and lots and lots of hugs, and you have yourself one awesome family reunion...

Lance was in Turkey the 2 weeks leading up to the reunion, so I picked him up at the Nashville airport Thursday night and we drove to Habersham from there on Friday... but only after eating some "good country cookin'" at Cracker Barrel first.  We got to Habersham just in time for the Friday night festivities... which I don't have any pictures of... but surprise, surprise... there was a lot of hugs and a lot of food.

Saturday morning one group heads over to the golf course, while the other group lounges by the pool.  You can guess which group I'm with.

Then Saturday night we all head over to one of the local elementary schools... because there are just that many of us.  The grown-ups usually mingle in the cafeteria while the kiddos get all sweaty running around in the gym.

And then we eat... again.

That, my friends, is what I call a plate of southern goodness.  I could eat my weight in that fried okra.

In order to let our food digest, we go through a list of family photos... here's our group.

Then... it's time to get serious.  Game time people.  After dinner and pictures, we are divided up into 4 big teams to play an assortment of competitive games.

First game was "face the cookie."  You start with a cookie on your forehead and try to move it down your face to your mouth... without using your hands.  My mother-in-law giving it her best shot...

Lance executed the cookie challenge in no time flat.

The girls decided they wanted to play this year.  They are currently in cookie-training.

Good thing their mom is an expert at this game... look at that mad skill.

Then we finished up game night with "pass the spoon."  OMG.  This might have been one of the more hilarious things I have ever witnessed.  Basically your team is in a line and has a spoon attached to a ball of yarn... you have to pass the spoon through your shirt AND pants, then to the next person, and the next person... all the way down the line... then you have to  reverse it and bring the spoon all the way back through the line again.  Absolutely hilarious.

I don't really know how to explain this photo... but let's just say the spoon was delayed in making it back down the line... and I was crying I was laughing so hard.  Seriously... I think I peed in my pants.

Sunday morning we gather one final time for brunch and a devotional.  This is probably my favorite time of the reunion.  One, because I mean, look at that amazing table of breakfast food... and two, because I always love the sweet stories that are told about this family.

This year, Lance led the devotional.  He shared about how special these reunions are to him... because it's a time for us to remember our heritage and past... but also a time to point to what's ahead.  We have the privilege of passing on these traditions and memories to the younger generations... what a gift.

When Lance and I were dating, I remember being so taken by his family.  I think because my own family is so close, this was always something that was so important for me in a future husband.  And man, did I hit the family jackpot.  Lance's family is truly so special and I am grateful to be a part of it.

thankful thursday

{Link up your own Thankful Thursday post below...}

This Thursday I am thankful for...

1) Southern home-cooked food.  And man, did I get my fill of it this past weekend.  At Lance's family reunion pretty much all we do is eat amazing home-cooked food and play crazy games... (but more on that later).  I'm pretty sure I had more fried okra and sweet tea this past weekend than I have all of last year combined... which I am totally okay with.

2) Shaved ice goodness.  Lance and I discovered this amazing dessert spot close to my office in Atlanta... they specialize in shaved ice treats... and it.was.amazing.  Even better than a snow cone, dare I say.  I'm not even sure how to explain it... it's like shaved gellato (I got strawberry) with condensed milk and fresh strawberries on the top... omg... so.flippin.good.

 3) My short commute to work.  I've been working at the office in Atlanta this past week... and Tuesday I drove my old commute... from Habersham to Gwinnett... 61.5 miles... ONE WAY.  I used to drive that every.single.day.  That's 123 miles a day... usually about 3 hours of my life... every.single.day.   That little reminder makes me oh-so-grateful for my short commute up the stairs every morning.  So, so thankful.

dear july

Dear July,

Holy crap.  It's August.

Is it just me, or is this year absolutely flying by?  And while summer continues to blur right past me... July didn't go by completely unnoticed.

July, you were a full and busy month... with farmer's markets and consignment shopping... with girls nights and girls weekends... with 4th of July parties and Christmas in July parties... with shoe shopping and antique shopping... with Gossip Girl and white wine... with disappointment and hope... with new friends and old friends... with home offers and adoption papers... with road trips and reunions...

And just like that, you push right into August, without ever turning back.

Goodbye July... Hello August.

Love,
Julia
