book review...

It's been quite some time since I've done a book review... 10 months ago, to be exact. This is mainly due to the fact that I am a horribly inconsistent reader... so sadly, in the last 10 months, I've really only read a handful of books. I am also blaming my lack of reading on the fact that I persevered through Pride & Prejudice early this year... I thought it would be a good idea to have "read a classic" as one of the items on my 30 by 30 list. But I'm happy to say I finished the book at 11:00pm on the night of my 30th birthday... no lie.

So... what else has been on my nightstand lately? Let's see, shall we...

Same Kind of Different as Me...
This was such an inspiring story written by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. A true story about an unlikely friendship between two grown men and how they overcame their prejudices. I think I enjoyed this book even more because I read it only a month or so before Lance and I moved into our new house. The book really challenged me to think about what I am doing to really embrace our new community and how I am making this new neighborhood "home."

The Time Traveler's Wife...
I bought this book probably over a year ago, and honestly, I wasn't really in a hurry to read it. I haven't seen the movie, and I didn't really understand how the whole time-traveler concept was going to draw me in. But I have to say... I was totally hooked after I started. Audrey Niffenegger does an amazing job with the characters, and once you get pulled into the love story between Henry and Clare, you soon realize the time-travel portion just weaves into the story and becomes almost normal.

Treasure Island...
I just barely started this book by Robert Louis Stevenson the other day... and I'm not quite sure what I think about it yet. This was one of the many books on my list of "books I should have read in school, but didn't." All of the pirate-talk is hard for me to get used to, but I really want to give it a shot... it's not a long book, by any means, and I really feel like I need to conquer this one. Maybe on my next flight?

The Help...
I know, I know... I am waaaay behind on this bandwagon. My mom recently let me borrow her copy of this popular book by Katheryn Stockett and I'm dying to dig in. The only problem is, based on the reviews I continue to hear about this amazing story, I know that once I crack this book open, I can pretty much count on nothing else getting done on my to-do list for a while. So, I continue to prolong... I haven't seen the movie either... maybe Treasure Island will have to wait...

What have you been reading lately? Have you read any of the above novels? If so, what did you think?

Ah! You have to read the Help and your reviews are accurate. NOTHING else will get done..it's THAT good. The movie is just as good.

I read the Time Travelers Wife. I was confused at first, but it was good. Helps with the movie b/c I don't think I would have understood the movie if I didn't read the book. I, too, started The Help, but didn't finish b/c it was too big at the time. I think I have time to read it soon so maybe I'll start. I'm reading Heaven is Real.

Same Kind of Different As Me is such a great read. My mom actually knows this family somehow...she got me to read it. I loved it! Challenged me as well. And The Help, oh The Help! You will love it. Once of the best books I've read in quite some time.

Treasure Island will have to wait. Archaic language and not as good as The Help :)
